This project was to provide landscape design for a new retail development on The Strand in Parnell, Auckland and it came with some distinct challenges for us as landscape architects. The industrial and raw site had a lot of concrete and very few existing opportunities for us to provide planting and soften the harsh surfaces throughout the site. Therefore the project revolved around the design and detailing of raised planters in as many places as possible. These included entrance planters to provide a sense of arrival and fabricated steel planters on top of old concrete beams and against walls with climbing frames providing much needed greenery to an otherwise very raw site. The decision was to allow the raw concrete columns and beams from a commercial building that previously occupied the site to remain, creating hanging gardens to compliment the structures. With limited opportunity to green the hard surfaces various planter options were designed to provide a chic look that enhances the architectural and industrial history of the commercial factory site.
